Hundreds of thousands of Myanmar migrant workers and pro-democracy exile groups across Thailand launched a coordinated mass mobilization today to mark the 81st birthday of jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
The demonstration features a sweeping multi-province signature campaign alongside humanitarian medical drives, serving as a powerful rebuke to the military regime in Naypyidaw.
It aims to amplify global demands for the immediate release of all political prisoners and independent verification that the democracy icon is still alive.
A surge of signatures across six provinces
Organizers confirmed to DVB that they have already shattered their initial benchmark of 30,000 signatures and are continuing to collect endorsements beyond June 19.
The completed petition is slated for official submission to the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to pressure regional diplomats into action.
The petition drive is cutting deep into the heart of Myanmar’s sprawling diaspora network, spanning six major industrial and border provinces in Thailand:
- Tak (including the primary border hub of Mae Sot)
- Kanchanaburi
- Samut Prakan
- Rayong
“I think it will ultimately reach at least 50,000 to 60,000 people,” said Pho Thagyan, a representative from the Overseas Irrawaddy Association (OIA), a community-based non-profit organization helping spearhead the initiative from Mae Sot.
“We have organized the activities for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday every year, but this year is especially significant because of concerns over her health and because we are also calling for the release of all political prisoners.”
Blood donations and the conscription exodus
Complementing the political petition, hundreds of exiled workers formed long queues at Mae Sot Hospital ahead of June 19 to participate in a synchronized blood donation drive.
Organized by the OIA, the drive marks the fourth consecutive year that the diaspora has donated blood on Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday as a symbolic offering of life and solidarity since the February 1, 2021 military coup.
The massive scale of this year’s mobilization highlights the shifting demographic reality inside Thailand. The kingdom has seen an unprecedented influx of young Myanmar nationals fleeing across the border, a migration wave that turned into a torrent following the regime’s enforcement of the 2024 military conscription law.
According to metrics from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 2.3 million Myanmar nationals were officially registered as workers in Thailand, while the number of undocumented refugees hiding from both the regime and Thai immigration authorities is estimated to be more than double the official figure.
Rejecting regime propaganda
The cross-border actions coincide with a massive, synchronized wave of international “Proof of Life” demonstrations. Activists and solidarity networks have organized corresponding rallies across the United States, Canada, South Korea, Australia, and the Netherlands.
“Your commitment and your support has been truly inspirational. And I know that we can keep on going,” Aris stated in a video message from his home in the U.K. “This has been a hard push but we can keep on going because we know that what we’re pushing for and what we’re fighting for is right. And we will not stop.”

Diaspora leaders emphasize that they completely reject recent unverified reports circulated by regime media claiming that the 81-year-old leader was transferred from a concrete isolation cell to a house arrest facility in Naypyidaw.
Because regime leader Min Aung Hlaing has systematically severed all access to her over the last five years—blocking even basic phone calls to her children—activists argue the claims are empty military propaganda.
As the signature drive continues across Thailand, underground networks inside Myanmar are defying strict police threats to execute another nationwide “Flower Strike” today, wearing and distributing roses to ensure that the regime’s attempts to erase their elected leader from the physical landscape remain a complete failure.
