NLD wins the election, now eyes 67% majority

The National League for Democracy (NLD) has won the general election as of the midday announcement of results by the Union Election Commission (UEC) in Naypyidaw.

The NLD had this morning been sitting comfortably with 196* seats in the Lower House, more than the 165 required to secure a majority in that chamber. It also had 77 seats in the 168-seat Upper House, waiting just eight elected representatives to take that House too.

The latest UEC announcement gave the NLD an additional 18 Upper House seats, which means their lead in the Upper House is unassailable.

All eyes will now be on the NLD’s target of 67 percent, which is required for them to have an overall majority in the Union parliament, due to the military’s constitutional entitlement to 25 percent of seats in both houses.
