Police fail to investigate fatal bike crash

Jan 14, 2009 (DVB), Police have failed to investigate a fatal motorbike accident in Mandalay's Myin Chan township involving the nephew of the divisional police chief, according to local students.

Two students were killed in the accident on 3 January, when they were hit by another motorbike ridden by the head of Tat Lan bus station in the town, who is the nephew of the Mandalay divisional police chief.

A student from Myin Chan Government Technological College said the two students were Po Po, a first-year student at the GTC, and Aung Khant Maw.

"Po Po was killed on the spot and Aung Khant Maw died after he arrived at Mandalay hospital," the student said.

"Authorities seized the motorbike they were on but not the one driven by the other guy who hit them," he said.

"We, the students of Myin Chan GTC, are planning to go to the police station when the school is open again and demand that they take action on the case," the student said.

The student said the driver of the other motorbike who hit the students was at fault and was drunk at the time of the accident, but now the families of the two students who died are facing threats of legal action.

Myin Chan police station was unavailable for comment.
