Rangoon chief minister files complaint against Reuters

Rangoon Division Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein has lodged a complaint with the Myanmar Press Council against Reuters news agency’s bureau in the commercial capital over an article it published earlier this month on two deals his government inked for the import of hundreds of buses from China.

Aung Hla Tun, the vice chair of the council, told DVB the complaint letter stated that the Reuters article harmed the dignity of the nation as well as that of Phyo Min Thein, who heads the regional government and is viewed as a rising star among the ruling National League for Democracy leadership. The letter of complaint also claimed that the offending article could potentially hamper foreign investment.

Officials from the Myanmar Press Council will hold a meeting to discuss the matter.

The article said the bus deals had “caused an unusual rift” within the NLD, quoting some members of the party critising Phyo Min Thein’s government as lacking in transparency.

The deals were part of a major overhaul of Rangoon’s public transportation system. The offending article did note that there was no evidence to suggest that any laws were broken in the procurement process.
