Sagaing farmers call for compensation, closure of nickel mine

More than a hundred farmers staged a protest in the city of Monywa on Monday, demanding compensation for farmland that was confiscated to make way for mining and other industrial projects in the area.

Residents from 22 villages around the town of Tigyaing said they lost a total of 16,632 acres to land grabs by the military government between 2005 and 2008 to make way for the Tagaung Nickel Mining Project – a joint venture with China – and other private industrial developments including a sugar mill operated by the Great Wall Co Ltd. They say no compensation was offered or received at any time.

On Monday, 100 villagers and farmers marched through the streets of Monywa, demanded compensation for the land confiscated, and the suspension of the nickel project, and six factories and mills operated by the Great Wall Co Ltd, which they claim never fulfilled a promise to create jobs for local farmers who had lost their lands.

A spokesperson for the protestors said they sent a formal letter of complaint to the union and regional governments, as well as to parliament in Naypyidaw and the Sagaing Division regional assembly, requesting help in recuperating losses.
