A Spanish tourist suffered severe injuries when he was attacked by an unknown group of men wielding swords in Pegu’s divisional capital.
Khin Thein Maung, a local administrative official, told DVB that the tourist, identified only as Carlos, was cycling close to the entrance of Pegu town on Monday evening when he was attacked by unidentified assailants.
“According to the victim’s statement, he was cycling alone outside of Pegu at around 11pm. He was attacked by some young men with whom he crossed paths. However, we don’t really know anything for sure as we had to communicate with him via an interpreter,” said Khin Thein Maung.

The victim sustained 13 slash wounds to his head, arms and legs, and was treated as an outpatient at a hospital in Pegu [Bago], according to local police.
A Pegu police officer said that the victim had said he planned to go back to Spain immediately.
The culprits are still at large.
Police did not confirm reports that have been widely shared on social media that have claimed that US dollars and Euros to the value of US$1,300 were stolen from the victim, along with his backpack containing clothes.
