Suu Kyi calls ‘emergency meeting’ during holidays

Aung San Suu Kyi, the de facto leader of Burma’s National League for Democracy (NLD)-led government, called an “emergency meeting” on Thursday as the country’s Thingyan holidays were in full swing.

The meeting, convened by Suu Kyi in her capacity as “state counselor”, lasted from 3 pm to 6 pm, according to Zaw Htay, a spokesperson for the President’s Office.

It wasn’t clear what was discussed during the meeting, but some observers have suggested that it might have been related to the issue of political prisoners, a number of whom remain behind bars despite the release of nearly 200 last week.

Suu Kyi, who had eye surgery earlier in the week, appeared to have no difficulty reading during the meeting.

She is scheduled to undergo an operation on her other eye at Naypyidaw Hospital on Saturday.
