Thai lantern ‘Yi Peng’ festival to light up skies over Chiang Mai

The opening ceremony of the Yi Peng festival, known for the lighting of candles and lanterns to celebrate northern Thailand’s Lanna culture, was held at the Three Kings Monument in Chiang Mai on Nov. 3.

“This is for everyone to come and enjoy and learn more, to know more about the origins and traditions of the Lanna people [of northern Thailand],” said Benz Nattanan, the Yi Peng festival host and event emcee.

The Governor of Chiang Mai Province officiated the opening ceremony of this year’s Yi Peng festival, which featured over 700 traditional dance performers and takes place during the full moon of the 12th month of the Lanna lunar calendar. The Yi Peng and Loi Krathong festivals end on Nov. 6.
