Twelve civilians killed and 4,300 displaced across southeastern Myanmar in October, report finds

At least 12 civilians were killed, 16 others were injured, and approximately 4,300 people were displaced by armed conflict across 14 townships in southeastern Myanmar during the month of October, according to a monitoring report released on Monday by the Ramanya Institute for Community-based Political Research.

The documentation covers incidents across Mon State, Karen State, and Tanintharyi Region, recording 10 armed ground clashes between Myanmar regime and resistance forces—including the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and joint Mon-Karen allied forces.

Alongside ground combat, the monitoring body tracked a relentless aerial and artillery campaign across 10 townships in Mon State, three in Karen State, and one in Tanintharyi Region, totaling 19 artillery barrages, six airstrikes, and 11 drone attacks using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

While the report noted that several resistance groups operating in the area remain publicly unidentified, it attributed all six airstrikes directly to the Myanmar Air Force.

Mon State’s Bilin Township—situated 69 miles (111 km) north of the state capital Mawlamyine within KNU Brigade 1 operational territory—endured some of the heaviest civilian harm.

The report highlighted an Oct. 13 airstrike that struck Aluu Gyi village in Bilin, killing five non-combatants and wounding 10 others, including a five-year-old child whose leg was amputated due to severe shrapnel wounds.

The findings reflect a broader pattern of aerial warfare documented across the country.

According to joint data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) project and DVB, the regime conducted at least 7,174 airstrikes nationwide between February 2021 and June 2026.

The Ramanya Institute, which has tracked conflict dynamics and human rights violations in southeastern Myanmar since the 2021 coup, noted that the combination of airstrikes, UAV strikes, and artillery shelling continues to drive severe civilian displacement and dismantle rural safety networks across the southeast.
