Sep 15, 2008 (DVB), Residents of Bago division’s Zeegone township have been taking steps to guard their houses at night after a spate of robberies in the township, according to locals.
A Zeegone resident said the thieves had mainly stolen bicycles and motorbikes parked on the street, including a local police detective’s motorbike.
He said that residents of Phaya road in ward 4 had caught a burglar breaking into a house a few days ago and found that he was a soldier stationed in Innma so they handed him over to military officers at the base.
Since then, the resident said, local authorities have been spreading rumours that cyclone victims from Irrawaddy who are now living in the town were responsible for the rising crime rate.
One local resident said his house had been broken into while he was out chasing thieves who had broken into another house in his ward.
