‘Zinme’ Thangyat performance on 5th anniversary of Myanmar coup

Zinme Thangyat, a troupe of Myanmar activists living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, performed traditional Burmese thangyat for a special DVB TV News program to mark the fifth anniversary of the 2021 military coup on Feb. 1.

Traditionally thangyat takes place during Myanmar’s Thingyan New Year in April, but this year’s performance started early to protest the anniversary of the military coup and the military’s elections, which ended on Jan. 25.

Khin Khin Gyi, a member of Zinme Thangyat, told DVB that the troupe blends satirical lyrics with rhythmic dance to deliver a “hard truth” about the crisis in Myanmar.

While criticizing the military’s misrule, the troupe also satirizes the lack of accountability and alleged financial mismanagement within the resistance, led by the National Unity Government (NUG).
