Activist arrested in Rangoon

Nov 27, 2007 (DVB), Aung Zaw Oo, an enthusiastic human rights campaigner and member of the Human Rights Defenders and Promoters network, was arrested yesterday in Kyauktada township, Rangoon division.

Aung Zaw Oo, who lives in Bokalay township in Irrawaddy division, was detained in a teashop at around 1pm yesterday by two men who were sitting at the next table to him.

One of the men was wearing shorts and a sports shirt and the other wore a longyi and shirt.

HRDP network leader U Myint Aye said that the men made it look as though they were friends of Aung Zaw Oo when they took him out of the teashop.

U Myint Aye did not know where Aung Zaw Oo was taken or on what grounds he was arrested, but said that the group assumed it was for his human rights activism.

"If he was arrested for his human rights activities, we suggest the government arrests all of us , we can provide them with a list of members," U Myint Aye said.

He said that the group would mount a legal challenge to Aung Zaw Oo's arrest.
