Military raid on KIO branch office

Nov 26, 2007 (DVB), A Kachin Independence Organisation branch office in Dawphum Yang was raided on 21 November by Burmese government troops, who arrested eight people.

The raid was carried out by a military unit from light infantry battalion 142 under the command of the northern military divisional headquarters.

Its target was the KIO administration office in Dingga, which is 15 miles from Laiza where the KIO headquarters is located.

Three of the eight people arrested were KIO officials and five were KIO soldiers; all are still being held in the township.

News of the raid and arrests was confirmed by KIO's Myitkyina office coordinator Khun Htet Khan, who said the group had been told that all eight would be released but was still seeking further information on their whereabouts and the reasons for the raid.

According to military sources, three government battalions under the command of the northern military divisional headquarters are now being placed near the KIO office.

The KIO has also alerted its troops to be prepared for fighting.
