Airstrike injures civilians in Ayeyarwady Region as major dam breach floods Lemyethna Township

Four civilians were injured when the Myanmar Air Force bombed a village in Ayeyarwady Region’s Lemyethna Township on Sunday, compounding a severe humanitarian emergency triggered by catastrophic regional flooding.

The airstrike hit as more than 14,000 residents were reeling from rising floodwaters caused by a 50-foot (15-meter) breach in the Ngawun Dam on July 31 following days of relentless monsoon rainfall.

Airstrike targets displaced families

Residents reported that regime fighter jets targeted Set Set Yo village—located 75 miles (120 km) north of the Ayeyarwady Region capital, Pathein—destroying three makeshift shelters housing internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had fled earlier fighting between the Arakan Army (AA) and regime forces.

  • Casualties & Damage: Four civilians sustained injuries during the strike, and three IDP shelter structures were leveled.
  • Resistance Presence: Set Set Yo is currently under the control of resistance forces allied with the AA after being temporarily secured. Local sources noted that the AA has not formally deployed administrative personnel from neighboring Arakan State into the village.
  • Proximity to Frontlines: The village sits adjacent to Yekyi Township, 15 miles (24 km) north of three military outposts captured by AA-led forces on June 27.

Ngawun Dam breach triggers mass inundation

The military attack hit a population already displaced by environmental disaster along the Ngawun River corridor. Following continuous heavy monsoon downpours, a 50-foot section of the Ngawun Dam breached on July 31, inundating low-lying agricultural zones and residential areas.

Lemyethna Township Disaster Impact Overview
├── Affected Population: 14,056 residents across 3,215 households
├── Inundated Zones: 5 urban wards and 14 rural villages
├── Educational Disruption: 74 basic education schools closed due to floodwaters (Aug 1)
└── Relief Infrastructure: 9 temporary shelters opened by volunteer networks & local authorities

According to figures published by the regime, nine emergency relief camps have been set up to shelter displaced households. Local volunteer organizations, community donors, and administrative departments are distributing drinking water, food rations, and basic medical aid to affected families.
