Aung San Suu Kyi meets Red Cross official in rare publicized meeting since 2021 arrest during coup

In a rare moment of contact with the outside world, jailed Myanmar civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with Arnaud de Baecque, the Resident Representative and Head of Delegation for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in Naypyidaw on Monday.

Regime spokesperson Khaing Khaing Soe announced the meeting on Aug. 3, circulating photographs showing the 81-year-old Nobel laureate shaking hands with de Baecque in a wood-paneled room, alongside images showing her cutting a birthday cake to mark her 81st birthday on June 19, 2026.

The release marks only the second time the regime has made official photographs of Aung San Suu Kyi public since detaining her on Feb. 1, 2021 during the military coup.

Kim Aris welcomes move but warns ‘questions remain’

Kim Aris, Aung San Suu Kyi’s son living in London, welcomed news of the meeting but urged international observers to maintain caution regarding her health and living conditions.

“While this news gives me hope, I remain cautious… One reported meeting cannot answer the questions my family has lived with for more than five years,” said Aris in a statement on Aug. 3.

Aris launched the “Proof of Life” campaign in April to force the regime to provide independent verification that his mother is alive and well.

He credited mounting political pressure from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and global human rights bodies with keeping her isolation in the international spotlight.

ICRC policy and civil society response

ICRC Myanmar confirmed that the meeting took place in the capital on Aug. 3. In line with standard humanitarian protocol, the organization noted that all observations and health recommendations resulting from the visit are shared “exclusively and confidentially” with regime authorities.

Rights groups viewed the encounter as a direct result of coordinated international advocacy, while emphasizing its legal implications:

• AAPP Assessment: The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) termed the meeting a “victory” of collective pressure from regional blocs like ASEAN and local advocacy networks.
• Status as a Detainee: The AAPP underscored that by facilitating a visit through the ICRC, Naypyidaw continues to treat the ousted State Counsellor as a political prisoner rather than as Myanmar’s elected leader.
• Call for Unconditional Release: The advocacy group reiterated its demand for the immediate, unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners jailed by the regime.

Aung San Suu Kyi is currently serving an 18-year prison sentence. Following a series of secret, military-controlled trials that initially resulted in a 33-year sentence, regime authorities have applied multiple partial commutations since 2022, including her reported shift from prison to house arrest on April 30.
