Airstrike on Internally Displaced Persons camp kills nine in Kalay Township of Sagaing Region

Kalay Township residents told DVB that at least nine civilians were killed, including four children, and over 30 were injured by airstrikes carried out by the military on a health clinic and school inside a camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in Tinthar village, 111 miles (180 km) west of the Sagaing Region capital Monywa, on Friday.

“Two fighter jets conducted two bombings. They also fired machine guns. We’ve confirmed nine dead, but there could be more casualties since we haven’t been able to verify everyone yet,” a Kalay resident told DVB, adding that there was no fighting near the IDP camp between the military and resistance forces.

Photos shared by residents to social media show severely disfigured bodies of those killed, leading analysts to believe that a powerful explosive was used. Regime media has not reported on the attack.

Two people, including an infant, were killed and at least seven others were injured by airstrikes in Khampat town and Kanan village, located 47 miles (75 km) north of Kalay, on Jan. 16.

Most of Sagaing Region, outside of the urban areas, are a resistance stronghold. The National Unity Government and its armed wing, the People’s Defense Force (PDF), controls five towns in the region including Khampat, Shwe Pyi Aye, Maw Luu, Myothit and Pinlebu.

It has been one of the areas most targeted by airstrikes with 711 documented in Sagaing Region from Feb. 1, 2021 to Nov. 31, 2024. Myanmar’s deadliest airstrike, since the 2021 military coup, killed 168 civilians in Pazigyi village of Kanbalu Township on April 11, 2023.

The Blood Money Campaign, a group formed by a coalition of anti-coup activists, stated that 4,022 airstrikes have been documented that have killed 2,257 people and injured 3,417 others from Feb. 1, 2021 to Nov. 30, 2024. It has called on the international community to impose an embargo on aviation fuel to the Myanmar military.
