High-profile celebrity activists released

Oct 18, 2007 (DVB), High-profile comedian Zaganar and film star Kyaw Thu were released yesterday after being detained for their support of the recent anti-government demonstrations.

Comedian and film director Zaganar (whose real name is Maung Thura) was released at about 7pm yesterday after spending 21 days in detention.

Zaganar was brought home by two officials and a photographer who came to record the release. Zaganar's mother-in-law was also photographed and her national registration card number noted.

A family member said that he is currently resting due to mental and physical fatigue.

"Ko Thura is not feeling well but he is not seriously ill. He spent about 21 days there so he does not feel well. I have told him to rest. His health situation is not that bad and he should be up and about in a day or two," she told DVB.

Film actor Kyaw Thu and his wife were also released yesterday, according to press reports.

Zaganar was arrested in the middle of the night on 25 September after he, Kyaw Thu and veteran politician Amyotharyay Win Naing offered food and support to monks at Shwe Dagon pagoda during the protests.

Kyaw Thu and his wife managed to avoid arrest until 10 October by fleeing their house just before it was raided by government officials.
