NLD take unassailable lead

Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), cannot be beaten in the polls.

Following the release of the latest election results from the election commission in Naypyidaw at 6pm local time, the NLD has now won 256 seats across both the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament.

The latest declaration from the UEC provided results from 67 Lower House constituencies, of which the NLD won 45. The incumbent USDP took nine seats, bringing its bicameral total to 21.

Other Lower House seat winners were: Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD)- 7; Arakan National Party (ANP)- 3; Zomi Congress for Democracy- 1; Kokang Democracy and Unity Party- 1; and an independent candidate in Shan State- 1.

The NLD will now focus on what most observers regard as the magic number: 329 seats in both houses, the equivalent of a 67 percent majority in parliament.
