Obama congratulates Thein Sein on ‘historic milestone’

This morning at 8:30, US President Barack Obama called President Thein Sein to congratulate him for “successfully implementing historic free and fair elections” in Burma, according to Information Minister Ye Htut.

Posting on his Facebook page, accompanied by a photograph of Thein Sein speaking to Obama by telephone, Ye Htut said the US president commended his Burmese counterpart, calling the general election “a historic milestone”.

Obama also reportedly said the reforms that Thein Sein had implemented were “brave”, and had “created a bright future” for the country, adding that the USA stands ready to cooperate with a new Burmese government.

President Obama has made two official visits to Burma, during which he met both times with Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
