Delta villages on high alert for riverbank erosion as Cyclone Murasu brings heavy rain

One home was completely destroyed in Ayeyarwady Region’s Wakema Township with six families evacuated from their homes in Yekyaw village after part of the Shwelaung Riverbank collapsed on Monday. No casualties were reported.

“The riverbank collapsed all of a sudden,” a rescue worker in Shwelaung town told DVB on the condition of anonymity. Wakema is located 52 miles (85 km) west of the region’s capital Pathein.

The six families evacuated from their homes on Nov. 2 in Wakema’s Yekyaw village told DVB that soil erosion along the banks of Shwelaung River caused their home to collapse into the river.

At least 25 people from Wakema’s Ahtet Pegon village were evacuated from their homes due to erosion along the banks of Shwelaung River in September 2021, regime media reported on Sept. 30.

The regime’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology forecast heavy rain in Ayeyarwady until Nov. 6 due to the impact of Cyclone Murasu, which is currently threatening India’s southeastern coast.
