Disaster management

As relief efforts continue in the quake-stricken Shan state in eastern Burma, some 700 fisherman remain missing off the southern Irrawaddy coastline, victims of a storm that struck in mid-March but which somehow remained invisible to the world’s eye. The scant attention this disaster has received is symptomatic of both the junta’s attempts to isolate the Irrawaddy delta after the debacle that followed cylcone Nargis in 2008, and the somewhat myopic workings of international media as reporters flocked to a more easily accessible disaster zone.
