CHIANG MAI, Thailand—The Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) is proud to announce the DVB Peacock Film Festival 2025, a celebration of cinema that gives voice to untold stories from Myanmar and beyond.
The festival will take place December 8–10, 2025, at Chiang Mai University’s Communication Innovation Center (CIC). Named after the Peacock, a symbol of resilience and freedom throughout the history of Burma. The festival highlights powerful films that explore human rights, social justice, cultural diversity, and freedom of expression.
This year’s program will feature:
🎬 Film Screenings – Including DVB Short Docs (DSDC), Citizen Journalist Shorts, Feature News Documentaries, Short film, and Special International Screenings.
🎤 Workshops & Masterclasses – Led by renowned filmmakers and experts, focusing on storytelling, directing, and filmmaking in times of crisis.
💬 Panel & Roundtable Discussions – Addressing the role of cinema in activism, media freedom, and human rights.
🌟 Special Events – Opening and closing ceremonies, a cultural food court, and an Awards Ceremony honoring outstanding films in multiple categories.
“Our festival works hard to amplify the voices of the people and to shine a light on ongoing human rights violations in Myanmar. These efforts have not only increased public interest locally but have also increased attention from international audiences, especially when the films are screened at festivals abroad,” said Chan Thiri Soe, the director of the DVB Peacock Film Festival.
While there have been many successes, challenges remain, particularly in sustaining financial support. Yet, thanks to the unity and collective effort of everyone involved, we are able to confidently move forward with this year’s festival. Looking ahead, no matter the obstacles, we believe that through collaboration we will continue to make the festival a success in the years to come,” she added.
The DVB Peacock Film Festival is more than just a celebration of cinema; it is a call to action. By providing a platform for stories that challenge the mainstream media coverage of Burma and give voice to the marginalized, the festival aims to inspire change and offer hope. We invite you to join us in this endeavour to recognize the power of film to transform society and promote a more just and compassionate world.
Through screenings and dialogue, the festival seeks to shine an international spotlight on Burma’s ongoing struggle to oppose military dictatorship since the 2021 coup. It celebrates the creativity and bravery of filmmakers from Burma who risk everything to tell the people’s stories.
