Land of collapsed Mandalay Sky Villa condo to be auctioned in November

The land and property rights for the collapsed Sky Villa Condominium site in Mandalay’s Aungmyaythazan Township—where more than 200 bodies were recovered following the catastrophic March 28, 2025 earthquake—are scheduled to be auctioned off in November.

Regime authorities announced that surviving unit owners or their legal representatives have a seven-day window to file formal objections and substantiate their ownership deeds, after which sales transactions will proceed under existing property and auction laws.

Surviving owners of collapsed Sky Villa condo units told local media that proceeds from the auction will be disbursed proportionally based on registered unit equity, though many face massive financial wipeouts; individual units were sold for at least 350 million MMK ($74,700 USD) during pre-disaster sales events in 2024.

Constructed in 2017 by N.T.L. Construction Company, the luxury 11-story residential complex became one of the deadliest single collapse sites in the country when the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar.

Out of more than 400 residents inside the building at the time of the quake, search-and-rescue teams from the Myanmar Fire Services Department managed to pull out only 52 survivors, recovering 206 bodies from the pulverized concrete debris.

In June, a regime court convicted N.T.L. Construction owner Naing Tun Lin of criminal negligence under Section 304-A of the Penal Code, handing him a five-year prison sentence with hard labor—a ruling that drew sharp outrage from bereaved families who condemned the penalty as far too lenient given the scale of casualties.

The upcoming land liquidation comes as the broader casualty toll of the disaster remains sharply contested between official records and independent monitoring.

The regime placed the total official death toll from the 2025 earthquake at 3,773, reporting 653 survivors nationwide.

However, DVB documented at least 4,477 people killed across the country, with Mandalay Region suffering the vast majority of the devastation with 2,916 confirmed fatalities.
