Regime-linked film production company changes name

FROM THE DVB NEWSROOM

The 7th Sense Creation is a film production company based in Yangon co-founded by Khin Thiri Thet Mon, the daughter of Min Aung Hlaing. Film producers in Yangon told DVB that it has changed its name to SM Winner as the boycott of regime-linked companies since the 2021 military coup, including in film and television, has affected it enough to lead to its rebranding.

“I request we continue boycotting everything associated with the regime,” said Peter, an anti-coup activist in Yangon’s Sanchaung Township.

The film A Kha Lon Moe (Overdue Rain) starring actors Nay Toe and Moe Hay Ko will be in cinemas on Sept. 22. The film’s producer credits were recently changed from 7th Sense Creation to SM Winner as noticed in the film’s promotional poster. Family members of the regime have changed company names in other sectors of the economy over the last two years, according to anti-coup activists.

The 7th Sense Creation film production company was founded in 2017. Its 2018 film Mone Swel (Clinging with Hate) has become one of Burma’s highest-grossing of all-time. In 2019, the company signed exclusive contracts with five Burmese movie stars and two celebrated film directors.
