Airstrikes kill 12 in Rakhine State as bombs target bridge and maternity clinic

At least 12 civilians were killed and 32 others were injured after the Myanmar Air Force launched a coordinated wave of airstrikes across Arakan State on Sunday, targeting civilian transit corridors, residential settlements, and a maternity facility across Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, Pauktaw, and Kyaukphyu townships, the Arakan Army (AA) reported.

The airstrikes hit critical infrastructure and healthcare facilities across AA-controlled territory, which includes 14 of 17 townships across Arakan as well as netihgbouring Chin State’s Paletwa Township.

On Nov. 1, an airstrike destroyed a key bridge connecting Kyauktaw and Ponnagyun townships north of the state capital Sittwe, killing seven commuters and injuring 10 others, local humanitarian worker Wai Hun Aung told DVB.

In the ancient royal capital of Mrauk-U, four consecutive aerial strikes struck a temporary maternity clinic, killing five healthcare personnel and patients—including an infant—and injuring nine.

Local residents speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed the medical site was dedicated exclusively to post-natal and infant healthcare.

Additional casualties were recorded across the state on Nov. 1: five civilians were injured when regime ordnance struck Ywargyichaung village in Pauktaw Township, while 11 residents were wounded in Kyaukphyu Township’s Sanel Minpyin village amid ongoing resistance pressure against the regime-held deep-sea port hub.

Kyauktaw, Ponnagyun, Mrauk-U, and Pauktaw were seized by the AA between January and March 2024, leaving regime forces confined largely to Sittwe and southern coastal enclaves while relying on long-range aerial and naval bombardments against civilian populations.

The attacks coincide with an urgent appeal issued on Oct. 30 by 70 Arakan civil society organizations, calling on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to establish an internationally enforced “no-fly zone” across Arakan to halt unhindered aerial atrocities.

The joint statement also demanded emergency humanitarian corridors that circumvent the military’s total land, riverine, and maritime blockades.

According to documentation compiled by the AA’s Humanitarian and Development Coordination Office (HDCO), at least 298 civilians have been killed and 678 wounded in airstrikes since October 2025 alone, while DVB has documented at least 531 civilian deaths and 848 injuries across 339 distinct aerial assaults—including fighter jets, drones, paramotors, and gyrocopters—since late March 2025.
