Chiang Mai rally to denounce the death penalty in Burma: “Stop executing our friends” 

University students from Thailand and Burma staged a rally at the Three Kings Monument in Chiang Mai, Thailand on Dec. 6, 2022. They denounced the military council’s planned execution of seven student activists from Dagon University in Yangon. The university students did performance art and read a poem from Min Ko Naing. They raised awareness about the planned executions in Burmese, Thai and English.

Karenni Creative Christmas Market: A Fundraiser for IDPs

The Karenni community hosted a fundraising event in Chiang Mai for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Burma on Dec. 3-4 at the Chiang Mai Drama Center. The event was a part of the Creative Christmas Market organized to raise funds by selling traditional Karenni snacks and Christmas cards made by students living in the IDP camps along the Thai-Burma border.

Shan New Year Celebration in Thailand 

The Shan New Year was celebrated Nov. 21-22 at Wat Welu Wanaram monastery in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This year was the first time to celebrate after a two year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions. It featured traditional Shan foods, fun games, and a live Shan musical concert.

Hanthar Nyein sentenced to an additional five years in prison

The Insein Prison Court sentenced Hanthar Nyein, 41, to an additional five years on Dec. 26. This brings the journalist, editor and co-founder of Kamayut Media to a total prison sentence of seven years. Hanthar Nyein was convicted under Section 33 (A) of the country’s Electronics Transactions Law. Last March, Hanthar was sentenced to two years with hard labor for violating section 505(a) of the Penal Code. “Since we have already expected such a matter, we will face and overcome this together with my imprisoned brother and my family,” Hanthar Nyein’s brother told DVB. Hanthar Nyein was arrested in March 2021 along with fellow Kamayut Media co-founder Nathan Maung, who was released by the regime in June 2021. Maung was deported to the U.S. last year where he spoke out about the abuse and torture he and Hanthar faced after their arrest. Hanthar Nyein was nominated for the RSF Prize for Courage at the 30th annual Press Freedom Awards 2022.

DVB Peace Documentary 2022 Award Winner: “X,Y, Z and then A”

DVB proudly presents the Peace Documentary 2022 Award to “X, Y, Z and then A” a film by Creatio. An international jury awarded this short doc on Dec. 24 out of 10 competing entries. In the first 10 weeks of 2023 all short docs will be aired and streamed online weekly.

Kanbawza Tai News Editor arrested in Bago Region

U Kyaw Zeya was arrested in Gyobingauk town of Bago Region on Dec. 25, sources told DVB. The editor-in-chief of Kanbawza Tai News fled his hometown of Taunggyi, Shan State, where his news outlet is based, in March 2021. “Now he has been arrested at his parents house in Gyobingauk. Since then, we cannot reach him,” a source said. Since the 2021 military coup, ten media workers have been arrested in Shan State, including five from Kanbawza Tai News. They were convicted of violating Section 505 (a) and sentenced to three years in prison. All five were released in an amnesty. The arrest of U Kyaw Zeya comes as Reporters without Borders (RSF) ranked Burma 176 out of 180, at the bottom of its World Press Freedom Index 2022. It has become the world’s biggest jailer of journalists relative to its population size, states RSF.

DVB presents for the first time the ‘Peace Documentary Award 2022’. This special program honours the winner of the short documentary contest among 10 competing films. DVB will air all documentaries in the first weeks of 2023.
